Cookie policy.

What this site stores on your device, why, and how to refuse it.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device. Cookies let a site remember things between pages and between visits, and they let the people running it see how the site is being used.

How we use them

We use a small number of cookies. Some are needed for the site to work at all. Others tell us which pages are read and which are ignored, which is how we decide what to write next. We do not currently use cookies to build advertising profiles, and if that changes we will update this policy and ask for your consent first.

Type What it does Can you refuse it
Strictly necessary Keeps the site working: page delivery, security, remembering your cookie choice and anything you have typed into a form No, the site will not work properly without these
Analytics Counts visits and shows which pages are read, how people arrived and roughly where they are. Reported in aggregate Yes
Functional Remembers preferences so you do not have to set them again Yes

Cookies set by others

This site is built on a third party website platform, which sets its own strictly necessary cookies so that pages load and forms submit. Where we use an analytics service to measure traffic, that service sets analytics cookies. Those providers have their own privacy notices.

If we embed anything from another site, such as a video or a map, that service may set its own cookies when the content loads.

Choosing what to allow

When you first visit, a banner asks what you are happy for us to use. Our intention is that nothing beyond the strictly necessary cookies is set until you choose. You can change your mind at any time by clearing the cookies for this site and reloading the page, which brings the banner back.

Turning cookies off in your browser

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies in its settings, usually under privacy or site data. Blocking all cookies will stop parts of this and most other websites from working properly.

More about what we hold

Information collected by cookies is personal information when it can be linked to you. Our privacy policy explains what we do with it and what you can ask us to do about it.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the cookies on the site change. The date at the top shows when it was last revised.
